Workshops:
20) Harmonica: Intermediate $100
Instructor: Herbineaux 5:00-6:00pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Registrants for this class must have enough experience to be able to play a melody with clear notes. The class is designed to help performers play their parts in an ensemble situation whether it is a duet, a trio, a quartet or more instruments playing together. Come with your C diatonic, C chromatic, bass or chord harmonica and let’s have fun playing together! Music theory and performance experience helpful but not necessary. The requirement is that students must be able to play a melody with clear notes.
21) Harmonica — Beginning — 10-hole diatonic with emphasis on Beginning Blues Harp $100
Instructor: Herbineaux with assistance from Delbridge
6:00-7:00pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Open to the first 15 to register. Learn to play the C major scale and the G blues scale on the 10-hole harmonica; how to get a good tone both blowing and inhaling; lip and tongue blocking; hand vibrato; throat vibrato; lip vibrato; and various other techniques. Bring a 10-hole harmonica in the key of C. Performance opportunities.
22) Harmonica: Chromatic — Beginning and Intermediate —
with Emphasis on Ensemble $100
Instructor: Herbineaux
7:30-9:00pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Open to the first 15 to register. Learn to play the C, F, and G scales and the chromatic scale. Learn to play in octaves and all of the techniques from the first course applied to the chromatic. Learn to use the lever to play sharps and flats. Students will be taught to play different harmonica parts for ensemble performance. Learn to play the chord harmonica and the bass harmonica, as well as the polyphonia (chromatic harmonica without lever). Bring a chromatic harmonica in the key of C, preferably with 12 or 16 holes. Performance opportunities.
From Tucson, AZ, World Champion Harmonicist Pierre Herbineaux, left, has performed extensively in Europe, the United States and Canada. Performances include two World’s Fairs and International Harmonica Conventions as well as commissions of new works for Harmonica. Herbineaux has been hailed as one of the world’s leading virtuosos and pedagogues of the harmonica.
Bruce Delbridge, right, from Fairbanks has played harmonica for 35 years. He started Hot Denali Harps and the Latin group, TOYOS which released two albums. He toured nationally with Bolivian soloist, Ernesto Cavour. He spends time in both Fairbanks and Tucson and performs in Tucson with the Professor Paul Blues Band and with Herbineaux.
