There will be two audition opportunities for Opera and Musical Theatre registrants who wish to be considered for lead roles: Saturday, July 12 (registrants will be contacted about times) and Sunday afternoon following “Meet the Artists”. Students who are not signing up for leads are invited to attend the Chancellor’s Reception in the Great Hall following “Meet the Artists”. PLEASE NOTE: Singers are encouraged to review vocal opportunities on page 16 for VOICE and CHORAL GROUPS, including two afternoon singing workshops beginning at 1:30pm, and four evening choral groups with rehearsals beginning at 5:00pm. Their performances will be Friday evening, July 25, Davis Concert Hall.
The Festival’s Opera and Musical Theatre Program
We remember with gratitude and affection the work which Kathryn Harvey and the late Robert McCoy did to establish this program in 1982. The goal of the program is to study, prepare and perform in costume a variety of selected arias, scenes and choruses from opera, light opera and musical theatre.

Performance: 1:00pm, Saturday, July 26, Davis Concert Hall
This performance will feature registrants and guest artists in costumed excerpts from opera, light opera and musical theatre. Scenes will be selected based on individual registrants and will include everyone in solo and ensemble roles.
The morning Opera and Musical Theatre class will be a musical rehearsal for all registrants. The class will provide a unique opportunity for singers who aren’t soloists to perform in the Opera and Musical Theatre Chorus and be a part of the scenes. No audition is required and the class size is unlimited.

Singers who are selected by audition for solo roles are requested to make themselves available for a significant portion of the afternoon. The rehearsal time required for individual roles is determined by the difficulty of the assigned scene(s). Every effort will be made to accommodate those who have signed up for other Festival classes. Scenes will be presented in costume on Saturday afternoon, 1:00pm, July 28.

Performance: Last Thursday, 3:00pm
A team-taught performance class for the solo singer, to include songs (art songs in foreign languages are encouraged), arias from opera/oratorio, and other repertoire of the singer’s choice. Individual performances are discussed in terms of technical, musical and dramatic presentation. Appropriateness of the literature for the individual is also addressed.
Dominic Cossa • Arnold, MD Baritone
According to The New Yorker magazine, Dominic Cossa possesses one of the most beautiful baritone voices you are likely to come across anywhere! His Metropolitan Opera roles included Figaro in the Barber of Seville and Marcello from La Boheme. He has sung with major orchestras under such eminent conductors as Bernstein, Solti and Ozawa. He is currently Chair of Voice/Opera at the University of Maryland.
Jennifer Crier Johnston • Washington, DC Production Assistant
Jennifer Crier Johnston has worked in all phases of ‘the business’ including acting in film, television, and theatre. She works frequently as a Production Assistant; and casts supernumeraries for the Kirov Opera. She has worked for the Washington National Opera and is currently working at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
JR Fralick • Cleveland, OH Tenor; Private Lessons
JR Fralick is an active recitalist and guest soloist who gives presentations on Russian music. He recently participated in the exclusive Franz Schubert Institute in Vienna. A graduate of Friends University, Kansas State University and Ohio State University with Vocalogy Certification from Denver’s National Center for Voice, he teaches at Baldwin-Wallace College.
JoAnn Kulesza • Stevensville, MD Pianist; Vocal Coach; Conductor
JoAnn Kulesza is Music Director of the Opera Department at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She has also served as coach/accompanist at the Hochschule MOZARTEUM; the Center for American Artists, and the Pittsburgh Opera Center. She also worked with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. As a conductor, she has several world premieres to her credit.
Louise McClelland • Vienna, VA Artistic Director; Mezzo-Soprano;
Private Lessons
Louise McClelland, Professor Emerita at the University of Maryland, has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras including the National Symphony. Known especially for her performances and teaching of Hugo Wolf songs, she was awarded the HW Medallion in Vienna. She has concertized internationally and is sought after as a master class teacher.
Michael More • Anchorage, AK Tenor
Michael More – tenor and 3rd generation Alaskan - holds vocal performance degrees from Indiana University and the University of Southern California. He built and directed the Anchorage Opera Company (1979-1985), and has been recognized nationally as a performer, arts administrator and music educator. He performs, directs and teaches through his private studio of 23 years in Anchorage. 2008 will be his 5th Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
Patrick O’Donnell • Washington, D.C. Pianist; Vocal Coach
Patrick O’Donnell received his D.M.A. from the University of Michigan. He is currently a member of the piano and voice faculties at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC. O’Donnell’s performances as a recitalist include the White House and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He’s also been on the music staff for touring programs for Western Opera Theater and others.
Cindy C. Oxberry • New York, NY Stage Director
Cindy Oxberry is multi-talented in being a stage director, arts administrator, producer, teacher and performer, having performed on opera stages in the U.S. as well as Europe. One of her proudest moments was when she was invited by Placido Domingo to travel to Mexico City where she served as the stage director to celebrate Mr. Domingo’s 40th anniversary in the International world of opera.
Russell Ryan • Vienna, Austria Pianist; Vocal Coach
A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory, Russell Ryan also attended master classes at the Juilliard School and at the Vienna Musikhochshule, where he graduated with honors. He has been on the staff of the vocal department of the Vienna Musikhochschule since 1985. He has appeared throughout the world in numerous Festivals, and radio and TV productions.
