World Music registrants have the opportunity to meet with their guest artists following “Meet the Artists” at 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon, July 13, to get acquainted during the Chancellor’s Reception in the Great Hall OR go to the first class on Monday . Please note: Registrants who do not have their own steel drums will pay a rental fee of $25 to defray the cost of maintaining workshop instruments.

57) Steel Drum Ensemble — Beginning $100
Instructor: Miller
3:00-4:00pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performance: Wednesday, July 23, 9:00pm, Salisbury Theatre
This class is for the person who has never had any steel drum classes — a true beginner! Students will learn the basics of playing Trinidadian Steel Drums. No keyboard or music reading skills are required. Class size limited to first 20 to register.

58) Steel Drum Ensemble — Beginning to Intermediate $100
This class has been cancelled. Please choose another.

2:30-3:30pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performance: Wednesday, July 23, 9:00pm, Salisbury Theatre
This class is for students who have had some beginning work with Steel Drums. The class will expand on the skills learned in the beginning class as noted above. No keyboard or music reading skills are required for this class either. Class size limited to first 20 to register.

59) World Percussion Workshop, Advanced ~ New this year! $100
Instructors:  Naranjo and Olsen 
3:30-5:00pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performance: “Lunch Bites”, dates to be announced
This exciting and intense workshop for advanced percussionists will  
explore technique, improvisation, and “vocabulary” in several world  
percussion idioms, including West African gyil (traditional  
marimba), conga (African-Cuban), djembe, Brekete/Luna (Ghanaian  
talking drum/snare drum) and shekere. Some singing.

60) Steel Drum Ensemble — Intermediate to Advanced $100
Instructor: Miller
5:45-7:30pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performance: Wednesday, July 23, 9:00pm, Salisbury Theatre
Students will learn to play several tunes on Trinidadian Steel Drums. Persons registering should have some previous experience playing them.

4) Festival World Beat Ensemble $100
Instructors: Naranjo and Olsen
2:00-3:15pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performances:  Wednesday, July 23, 9:00pm, Salisbury Theatre and Sunday, July 27, Davis Concert Hall, 8:00pm
This dynamic ensemble will utilize hand drums such as conga and djembe, and related percussion instruments. Styles of music originating from Africa and the Americas will be studied and performed on the gala finale World Music concert, Sunday evening. Open to all who want to learn!

5) Festival Dance With Drums — All levels of dancers $100
Instructor: Kreith
4:00-5:00pm, M-F, Week I; M-Th, Week II
Performance: Wednesday, July 23, 9:00pm, Salisbury Theatre
This class is designed to introduce dancers of all levels to a variety of rhythms and dances developed by the people of West Africa, the Caribbean, Cuba and Brazil.

6) Festival Steel Drum Ensemble — Advanced $100
Instructor: Miller
8:00-9:30pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Performance: Sunday, July 27, 8:00pm, Davis Concert Hall
This ensemble is designed for the student who has developed some mastery of the Trinidadian Steel Drums or pans as they are called. One year’s experience is required, unless instructor approval is given. Students in this class will continue the mastery of the instruments and will perform authentic arrangements of popular pan music.

7) Festival Native American Choir ~ New this year! $100
Instructor:  Naranjo
8:30-10:00pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Performance: Wednesday, July 23, 9:00pm, Salisbury Theatre
This course will explore the Native American’s understanding of the healing, and rejuvenating ability of the voice and its power to bond with the “worlds beyond”; and will prepare several beautiful Native choral songs for the World Music concert Wednesday evening.
 
8) Festival Marimba Ensemble ~ New this year!   Beginning $100
Instructors: Hatcher and Naranjo (See below)
8:30-10:00pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Performance: Wednesday, July 23, Salisbury Theatre, 9:00pm
The Beginning Marimba Ensemble Workshop will spend the first few days learning the  basics of this wonderful instrument with Hatcher, and then will fuse with Naranjo’s Native American choir to perform on  the Week II Wednesday evening performance.

9) Festival Latin Jazz Ensemble $100
Instructors: Olsen and Cherico
8:30-10:00pm, M, Tu, Wed, Week I; M-F Week II (right after Jazz Band!)
Performance: Sunday, July 27, 8:00pm, Davis Concert Hall
This small group combo will explore Afro-Cuban and related styles in the context of jazz. The ensemble will focus on mastering the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic aspects of this style. There will also be an exploration into the historical and cultural foundations of Latin music. Experience with performing jazz or Afro-Cuban/Latin music is recommended.

 

Guest Artist Judy Kreith • Fairbanks, AK
Dance with Drums; Concerts
Coordinator

Judy Kreith received her masters in dance education from Stanford. She has taught and performed in Cuba, Colorado, California and throughout Alaska. She produced a program for children following the history of jazz and social dance. She has received grants to study in Africa and Cuba. Pursuing her research of Cuban music and dance, she continues to travel to Cuba. She teaches dance at UAF.
Guest Artist Colin McAllister • San Diego, CA
Classical and Jazz Guitar
Colin McAllister has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. He has recorded for the Old King Cole, Tzadik, and Innova record labels, and is published exclusively by Les Productions d’Oz. McAllister is the director of the guitar program at the University of California, San Diego. www.colinmcallister.com. McAllister will be working with Morris Palter in the Festival’s World Music program, too.
Guest Artist Tom Miller • San Francisco, CA
Steel Drums and World Drumming
Tom Miller has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, Mexico, Japan and the Caribbean. His playing can be heard on recordings of artists such as John Denver and Allison Krause. Miller’s dedication to the future of music education has brought him invitations as guest clinician and performer at many universities.
Guest Artist Valerie Naranjo • New York, NY
Marimba and African Gyil
The first woman permitted to perform African gyil, and the only Westerner to receive a first prize at Ghana’s prestigious Kobine Festival, Valerie Naranjo performs on six continents: (Saturday Night Live Band, Broadway’s Lion King, Philip Glass, Carnegie Hall’s “Musical Explorers” series” 2008.) Named “World Percussionist of the Year” by “Drum!” magazine, she has six CDs and ten publications to her credit.
Guest Artist Barry Olsen • New York, NY
Conductor Latin Jazz Ensemble
Barry Olsen has played trombone with Latin artists Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Hector Lavoe, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony, La India; and with Paul Simon, David Byrne, and Charlie Persip. He’s played piano and percussion with Paul Winter, the Latin-jazz group Syotos, African masters Kakraba Lobi and Bernard Woma, and Broadway’s Lion King.
Guest Artist Morris S. Palter • Fairbanks, AK
World Music Artistic Coordinator
Born in Canada, Morris Palter performs regularly at festivals and concert halls throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. He holds a Doctorate degree from the University of California, San Diego (2005) and currently heads the percussion program at UAF. In 2000, Morris co-founded NOISE (San Diego New Music) and in 2003, he founded the “Speak-Easy Duo.” Palter is endorsed by Black Swamp Percussion and Paiste Inc.
