ACCORDION ~ Week II only

Guest artist Joe Smiell will be here Week II beginning Monday, July 21. Registrants will meet him at the class times listed below. Registrants are encouraged to consider taking other Festival classes offered both weeks. Please note: The maximum registration fee – regardless of how many classes you select – is only $550. See the registration form for discounts available. QUESTIONS? Contact Christine Upton, (907)457-3392, alaskac3@acsalaska.net It is best to bring an instrument with you. However, several piano accordions and button boxes will be available to rent for in-class use ONLY. Call Christine to reserve one. It is best to bring a Slovenian (Austrian) button box. However, Joe Smiell will instruct you in a regular GCF button box with minor fingering adjustments. Registrants who don’t read music are encouraged to take Ron Drotos’ Fundamentals of Music classes listed on page 17.

Workshops

11) Accordion: Intro to Slovenian Button Box $75
Instructor: Smiell 11:00-12 noon, M-F, Week II
Student must read simple music. See info above re: instrument.

12) Accordion: Intro to Piano Accordion, $75
Instructor: Smiell 1:30-2:30pm, M-F, Week II
Student must read simple music.

13) Accordion: Experienced Slovenian Button Box $75
Instructor: Smiell 2:45-3:45pm, M-F. Week II
Same as intro above. Familiarity with the instrument and minimal playing experience recommended.

14) Accordion: Piano Accordion and Button Box Ensemble* $100
Instructor: Smiell 4:00-5:15pm, M-F, Week II
All levels welcome to play parts music in an accordion orchestra! Performance opportunities at “Lunch Bites”.

15) Accordion: Experienced Piano Accordion $100
Instructor: Smiell 5:30-6:45pm, M-F, Week II
Student must sight read at least easy music in treble and bass clefs. Emphasis will be on skill building and technique: Embellishment, articulation, phrasing and nuances of music.

*For more opportunities in ensemble playing, accordion registrants are welcome to participate in American Roots’ Old Time Dance Band, Week I, 8:15-9:45pm. Also, consider the Celtic Harp Irish and Scottish Session for Multi-Instruments, Both Weeks, 4:15-5:45pm.

Button Box and Piano Accordion
Joe Smiell is a recognized virtuoso on both the button box and piano accordion. His unique performance combines classical training with the flavor and charm of the traditional Austrian folk accordion. He has performed throughout the world — everything from symphonies and opera companies to stage shows and TV productions. Smiell conducts master classes throughout the United States, and can be here Week II only — he has an Accordion Camp the previous week!
