AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC ~ Week I ~ New this year!

Dancer Eileen Carson Schatz and Old Time instrumentalist-singer Joe Herrmann will be in Fairbanks to teach our new American Roots Music workshops. Eileen and Joe will meet their clogging students at 4:45pm on Monday, July 14, at the Artisan’s Courtyard. (See page 22 for more dance classes.) QUESTIONS? 16) Southern Appalachian Clogging and Flatfooting New this year! $75
Instructor: Carson (instrumental accompaniment by Herrmann)
4:45-6:00 pm, M-F, Week I
Open to the first 30 students to register, this course will focus on the fundamentals of traditional clogging and flatfooting. The emphasis will be on keeping good time and making good sounds with your feet, individual expression, dancing for fun, and connecting to the music in a relaxed, social setting.  The course will be taught for beginning/intermediate dancers.

17) Old Time Fiddle New this year! Location to be announced. $75
Instructor: Herrmann
6:30-8:00pm, M-F, Week I
Open to the first 15 students to register, this course will focus on old time fiddle (mandolins also welcome). In order to provide a forum for all levels, Joe will design the class around the participants. Some experience is preferred. The class will offer everything from basic elements of tone, intonation and rhythm to more advanced techniques. New tunes for all!

18) Old Time Dance Band* New this year! Location to be announced. $75

8:15-9:45pm, M-Th, Week I
Open to the first 30 students of all levels to register. All are welcome .A great opportunity to meet and play.

Guest Artist Eileen Carson Schatz • Crownsville, MD
Choreographer, Dancer and Lead Vocalist
Eileen Carson Schatz – Founding Director of Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble – has toured internationally. She was guest choreographer and performer in Riverdance in London. As Artistic Director, choreographer, dancer and lead vocalist for Footworks, she has received numerous awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowship; a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award, and in 2006, she was selected “Artist of the Year” by Young Audiences of Maryland.
Guest Artist Joe Herrmann • Paw Paw, WV
Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar
Joe Herrman is a talented multi-instrumentalist who has been making music for over 30 years. He is well-known in traditional music circles for his singing and instrumental prowess. He founded The Critton Hollow String Band with his wife, Sam Herrmann, in 1975, and has toured internationally and recorded six albums. A favorite of many instructional weeks and festivals, Herrmann is known for his patient and generous teaching and his great command of Appalachian repertoire.
