Brass registrants have the opportunity to meet with their guest artists following “Meet the Artists” at 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon, July 13, to get acquainted during the Chancellor’s Reception in the Great Hall OR go to their first class on Monday. Please Note: The maximum registration fee – regardless of how many classes you select – is only $550. See the registration form for discounts available and information on private lessons. QUESTIONS? 40) Brass Ensemble — Conductor: Brockman $150
10:00am-12:00noon; M-F, Both Weeks
This group will do sight-reading of literature from the brass repertoire and will perform at “Lunch Bites.”

41) Brass: Chamber Music Ensembles — $135
Instructors: Staff
1:30-3:30pm; M-F, Week I; M-Th, Week II
Music will be supplied, but students are encouraged to bring their own. Pre-formed groups are welcome.

42) Brass Master Class — Instructors: Staff $75
3:30-4:30pm; MWF, Week I; MW, Week II
The guest artists will conduct master classes with their students.

43) Brass Sectionals — Instructors: Staff No Charge
Time to be arranged.
Brass players in the Festival Orchestra are urged to attend sectionals, which will involve repertoire to be performed.

Performance Classes

1) Festival Orchestra — Conductor: Guyver $100
7:30am-10:00pm; M-Th, Both Weeks
Performance: Saturday, July 26, 8:00pm, Davis Concert Hall
Planned repertoire will include Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espanol;
Sarasate’s Navarra, featuring Alvaro and Routa Gomez;
Mozart’s Flute & Harp Concerto (First Movement) featuring Jenny Lindner and John Barcellona; Three Leroy Anderson pieces, including “Belle of the Ball”; and the Dvorak Symphony No.8 in G.

2) Festival Wind Ensemble — Conductor: Brockman $100
4:30-6:00pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performance: Friday, July 25, 7pm, Davis Concert Hall
The Festival Wind Ensemble will be exploring music from an array of world wide composers. The concert repertoire will be selected from among such notables as Nelhybel, Bernstein, Holst, Persichetti, Vaughan-Williams, and Copland. In addition, rehearsals will focus on the techniques of balance, phrasing, dynamics, articulation, sight-reading, and quality concert preparation.
3) Festival Jazz Band $100
Conductor: Hopkins
Rehearsals: 6:00-8:00pm, M-F, Week I, M-Th, Week II
Performance: 8:00pm, Thursday July 24, Wood Center Ballroom
This is a great opportunity for instrumental registrants to perform with an internationally known conductor. Music will range from Big Band to Jazz. Jazz strings welcome, too. Registrants can meet Hopkins after “Meet the Artists” on Sunday, July 13, or come to the first rehearsal on Monday evening, July 14.
9) Festival Latin Jazz Ensemble $100
Instructor: Olsen
8:30-10:00pm, M, Tu, Wed, Week I; M-F Week II (right after Jazz Band!)
Performance: Sunday, July 27, 8:00pm, Davis Concert Hall
This small group combo will explore Afro-Cuban and related styles in the context of jazz. The ensemble will focus on mastering the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic aspects of this style. There will also be an exploration into the historical and cultural foundations of Latin music. Experience with performing jazz or Afro-Cuban/Latin music is recommended.

 

Guest Artist James Atkinson • Los Angeles, CA
French Horn
James Atkinson is a versatile hornist performing in the Hollywood Motion Picture and TV Studios, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. He also performs with the Southwest Chamber Music Ensemble and performed on their GRAMMY Award-winning CD, “Carlos Chavez - Complete Chamber Music, Vol. 2”. Atkinson is Director of Horn Studies at California State University Long Beach.
Guest Artist Bill Booth • Sherman Oaks, CA
Trombone
Bill Booth is on the music faculty at UCLA, and UC Santa Barbara, and he performs in many areas of LA’s music industry. His recording credits include hundreds of motion pictures including King Kong, I Am Legend, The Incredibles, Cars and Titanic. He’s also done TV shows and jingles. He is principal trombone with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
Guest Artist Peter Brockman • Grawn, IN
Trombone; Conductor
Peter Brockman holds degrees in performance and education from Indiana University. He held the positions of Instructor of Trombone and Low Brass and Jazz Ensemble Director at the Interlochen Arts Academy for ten years prior to moving to Southern California, where he has since performed with several orchestras. Brockman recently moved back to Indiana.
Guest Artist Burnette Dillon • Vida, OR
Trumpet
Burnette Dillon has been a performer, educator and conductor for over thirty years.  Performing as Principle Trumpet for the Pacific Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Orange County Opera Pacific, the American Ballet Theater, the Joffrey Ballet, he has also performed on hundreds of motion picture sound tracks and numerous Broadway shows.
Guest Artist Kurt Snyder • Los Angeles, CA
French Horn
Kurt Snyder has an extensive background in music performance and pedagogy. His post graduate work was done at the Juilliard School of Music, and his students have been winners of several competitions. As a studio artist, he has performed in more than 500 motion pictures and TV broadcasts, and has recorded with Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and B.B. King to name a few.
