Dance registrants will meet with their guest artists at 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon, July 13 at the Artisan’s Courtyard, College Road and Westwood Way for placements. Dancers who cannot be at the placements must contact local coordinator Sheri Merdes, (907)457-2029, cell (907)388-3741, deneki@att.net to make arrangements for another placement time. The performance will be held at UAF Salisbury Theatre on Saturday, July 26, at 3:30pm. QUESTIONS? Contact Sheri Merdes above.
Workshops
Students may sign up for dance classes as follows:

The following dance classes will be offered for students ages 12 and over who have had a minimum of two years of formal training. See grid for time and location.

Clogging Class: This class is not included in the $395 dance registration.
16) Southern Appalachian Clogging and Flatfooting New this year! $75
Instructor: Carson (instrumental accompaniment by Herrmann)
4:45-6:00 pm, M-F, Week I
Open to the first 30 students to register, this course will focus on the fundamentals of traditional clogging and flatfooting. The emphasis will be on keeping good time and making good sounds with your feet, individual expression, dancing for fun, and connecting to the music in a relaxed, social setting. The course will be taught for beginning/intermediate dancers.
89) Dance: Teen Balance
Instructor: Sinclair
1:00-2:00pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395
Changing your every day posture will give you a natural advantage in your artistic and athletic endeavors.
90) Dance: Teen Swing!
Instructor: Brown 4:15-5:15pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395.
Join in the fun of learning swing! Students will learn a swing routine to perform at the end of the two weeks.
91) Dance: Swing for the Young at Heart! New this year!
Instructor: Brown 5:30-6:30pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395.
This class will cover a variety of swing styles including East Coast, West Coast, Lindy, Charleston and possibly Hustle and Country Swing (depending on class interest). Teens 14 and up and adults welcome to enroll. No partner necessary. Partners will be encouraged but not required to rotate.
92) Dance: Middle Eastern for Teens
Instructor: Chapa 6:00-7:30pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395.
This class is designed for teen dancers of all levels that wish to gain a deeper understanding of the different styles, history and evolution of Middle Eastern dance from a social dance to performance art. The majority of the class time will focus on the basic dance vocabulary and veil technique associated with American style belly dance.
93) Dance: Adult Ballroom
Instructor: Brown 6:45 -8:00 M-Th
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395.
We will cover a variety of ballroom dances including Waltz, Foxtrot, Cha-Cha, Night Club Two-Step, and possibly the Viennese Waltz. No partner necessary. Partners will be encouraged but not required to rotate.
94) Dance: Adult Middle Eastern
Instructor: Chapa 7:30-9:00pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395.
This class is designed for adult students with some or no background in Middle Eastern dance, or adults who want to refine their technique and gain a deeper understanding of the different styles, history and evolution of Middle Eastern dance from social dance to performance art. The majority of the class time will focus on the basic dance vocabulary and Modern Egyptian style of dance.
95) Dance: Adult Partner Ballroom and Swing New this year!
Instructor: Brown 8:15-9:30pm, M-Th, Both Weeks
Registration Fee $100 or included in the $395.
Week I will cover the Foxtrot and Waltz. Week II will cover the East Coast and possibly the West Coast Swing (depending on class preference). This class is designed for couples who do NOT wish to rotate. You may enroll without a partner, and we’ll do our best to find you one!
Performance: Saturday, 3:30pm, July 28, UAF Salisbury Theatre
An informal presentation featuring dance registrants and guest artists in a selection of works-in-progress from all the classes. Participation will be at the instructors’ discretion. Students wishing to participate must attend the appropriate Technique and Performance classes both weeks.
Stefani Brown • Fairbanks, AK Ballroom and Swing
Stefani Brown danced with Brigham Young University’s undefeated U.S. National Formation Champion Ballroom Dance Company in 10 foreign countries and all over the United States. She is the director and founder of Lathrop High School’s Swing and Ballroom Dance Club. She says ballroom dancing is a lifelong skill that is good for the soul!
Susan Chapa • Fairbanks, AK Middle Eastern
An energetic performer and instructor, Susan Chapa is a founding member of Tundra Caravan Middle Eastern dance troupe. Susan has been dancing since the age of nine, and has studied Jazz, African, Ballet,Tap and Hip-Hop. In 1998, she began studying Middle Eastern dance at Kismet School of Dance Orientale in Salt Lake City, UT. She has since devoted her time to learning, performing and teaching this ancient art form.
Krenly Guzman • Los Angeles, CA Modern Dance
Krenly Guzman served as Associate Artistic Director of Lucky Plush Productions from 2003-2006. In addition to being a faculty member at Columbia College Chicago for the past thirteen years, Krenly has acted as an adjudicator, teacher and choreographer for dance festivals in the United States, Mexico and South America. He has also performed with Jan Erkert & Dancers and Mordine & Company Dance Theatre. He is currently doing graduate studies in Los Angeles.
Trudy Harris • Spokane Valley, WA Staff Accompanist
Trudy Harris is active as a collaborative pianist, teacher and music educator. She free-lances for a variety of soloists, playing also for classes, festivals and other events. Former adjunct faculty at UAF, Trudy is an experienced performer with large performance groups and has accompanied several hundred students in recitals and competitions.
Lilian Manansala • Woodland Hills, CA Jazz
Lilian Manansala is a dancer, choreographer, actress and master teacher who has a passion for the arts. She trained at Retter’s Academy of Dance, and has assisted master teachers on Tremaine Conventions and the Encore Convention to name a few. Most recently she choreographed and performed an event to help raise awareness for ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History.
Elizabeth Miller • Honolulu, HI Ballet
Elizabeth Miller studied ballet under the guidance of Nolan Dingman and received coaching from Alexandra Danilova and Nina Tinova. She has danced leading roles in numerous ballets including Swan Lake, Giselle and Coppelia in the U.S.,
Europe and Asia. Miss Miller is presently Ballet Mistress and Co-Director of Honolulu Dance
Studio.
Richard Poland • Anchorage, AK Ballet Pianist
Richard Poland has been active in Alaska’s musical community since moving to Anchorage in 1975. He received his piano degree from Kansas State University with further studies at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He maintains a private piano studio and has been dance accompanist with Alaska Dance Theatre since 1992.
Patrick Roddy • Omaha, NE Tap and Theatre Dance
Patrick Roddy has lived and studied dance on both coasts, and has taught at workshops and programs nationally. Currently residing in Omaha, NE, he teaches in area studios, choreographs local theatrical productions and is a Resident Dance Instructor at Creighton University. 1996-2000 saw him as dance faculty at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
Maria Vegh • Petaluma, CA Ballet — Week I
Maria Vegh has had a rich and varied career as a performer, artistic director and master teacher. Formerly co-director of Harkness House in NYC, she was also the founder of the Ballet Repertory of Pennsylvania and Artistic Director of Marin Ballet in California. Vegh now works primarily with pre-professional dancers, and guest-teaches throughout the U.S. and Japan.
