ICE SKATING ~ Week II

The Skating Private Lesson form is now avaialble! Please note: Ms. Jill Shipstad-Thomas's lesson schedule is full as of April, 2008 and the form has been updated. If you'd like to learn more about the Skating Private Lessons, that information is further down this page.

Skating registrants are reminded that their classes are Week II only: Monday, July 21st through Saturday, July 26th. See below for registration fees, instruction for signing up and paying for private lessons in advance, as well as how to download the daily schedule from the Festival’s web site in July. All classes will be in the UAF Ice Arena. We regret that we will not be able to schedule classes for beginners this year. QUESTIONS: Contact Angel Lee, (907)490-3196, gleealee@gci.net

Skaters may sign up for the freestyle program:
85) • By the day $60
84) • All day, M-F, Week II of the Festival: $265

Students registering for all day must have passed basic 8 USFSA, ISI Freestyle OR have permission from their coach. The Festival’s skating program is technique-based with the opportunity to perform.

The all-day fee gives the registrants the opportunity to participate in 2-3 freestyle sessions as well as group on-ice classes in spins, creative movement, jumps, edges and power. Group off-ice classes will be offered in dance and skating techniques.

IMPORTANT: Skaters are expected to be on time for their classes!

Private Lessons
Private lessons with the guest artists will be available during freestyle sessions at the rate of $35 for 1/2 hour. Skaters must register for the Festival first ($265) then complete the Private Lesson Form. Private Lesson forms must be postmarked no later than July 1st. Early registrants will get first choices for private lessons—first come, first served. Follow the directions on the Form, please! Skaters can sign up for any available openings on the first day of classes, Monday, July 21.

Daily Schedule — Please read carefully!
The freestyle program is a full-day program including group classes interspersed with freestyle sessions. Skaters are encouraged to register prior to July 1st if possible. Based on registrations received by July 1st, the local coaches will prepare the daily schedule according to the skating levels and number of registrants in any given level.

PERFORMANCE: Saturday, July 26, UAF Ice Arena
Rehearsal at 3:30pm. Performance at 5:30pm
Registrants are encouraged to participate in this informal performance which will showcase the skills skaters learned during the week.

Jill Shipstad Thomas • Reno, NV
Ice Skating
Jill Shipstad Thomas comes to us from a superb line of figure skating greats. Her father, Roy Shipstad, co-founded and produced the Ice Follies, the first world-class traveling professional ice show. Ice show star Bess Ehrhardt is her mother. Over the years Jill dazzled audiences by starring in Holiday on Ice while touring the U.S. She has been a choreographer for Walt Disney’s World On Ice shows for many years.

Cindy M. Solberg • Eagle River, AK
Ice Skating
A USFS Gold Medalist who holds a PSA Master Rating and has been coaching for 33 years. Cindy is a Specialist in the new International Judging System and an ISI Gold judge. She has coached several National medalists and competitors. Solberg operates TEAM ALASKA Skating School in Eagle River.

Richard Griffin * Colorado Springs, CO
Richard Griffin has 27 years of coaching experience at The Broadmoor Skating Club, focusing on dance and moves in the field. He is PSA Master-Rated in Dance and Free Dance, and is a USFS Double Gold Medalist, US National Junior Dance Silver Medalist and is also a Regional and Sectional Junior Dance Champion. He was selected to coach teams at the Olympic Sports Festival, and he has choreographed shows for corporate conventions, skating clubs and The Colorado Springs Symphony.
