Visual Arts registrants will have the opportunity to meet with their guest artists following Meet the Artists at 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon, July 13 to get acquainted during the Chancellor’s reception in the Great Hall OR go to the first class on Monday morning. Open to the first 12 to register, this class will provide step-by-step instruction in painting the head-and-shoulder portrait in oil from the clothed model. Instructor’s demonstrations will focus on structure, light and shadow and mixing flesh colors. Experience in drawing and in mixing color is highly recommended. Karen Austen • Fairbanks, AK Portraits in Oils
Karen Austen makes her living painting commissioned artworks, including portraits of adults, children and pets, from her studio in downtown Fairbanks. She has taught painting and drawing courses at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and in wilderness areas of Alaska, and she holds a Master’s Degree of Fine Arts.

Rita Baragona • Columbia, NJ Oils and Acrylics
Rita Baragona lives in rural New Jersey where she paints landscapes and still-lifes. She has had numerous exhibits at the Bowery Gallery in New York City, and her paintings have been shown in many galleries and museums, including the Dutot Museum, the Wycoff Gallery, and the William and Mary College Museum. Her work is in the permanent collection at www.bowerygallery.org

Linde Kienle • Fairbanks, AK Contemporary Book and Paper Artist
Linde Kienle has been a master bookbinder for more than 40 years. She apprenticed in Germany and did her journey years as a book designer in Switzerland. Her workshops this year will help the registrants develop an elegant way to present their work either as an artist or as a collector. She has given numerous workshops at universities and art studios in Alaska, Oregon and Hawaii and she has had many solo shows.

Kathleen Hildebrand Meckel • Fairbanks, AK Athabascan Beadwork
Kathleen Hildebrand Meckel learned the art of beadwork at an early age from her grandmother who lived in the village of Nulato, Alaska. She beads jewelry and traditional Athabascan regalia pieces. She enjoys teaching the basic techniques of beadwork to her students and watching what they create. She presently teaches at the Effie Kokrine Charter School in Fairbanks.

Open to the first 12 who register, this class is designed to introduce the student to the medium of watercolor including materials, methods, and techniques. The class will progress from basic procedures to color, design, and composition. Weather permitting, the class will sketch on location around the campus and learn how to turn field sketches into finished paintings. No previous experience necessary.
Gael Baxley Murakami • Fairbanks, AK Beginning Watercolor
Gael Baxley Murakami is known for her watercolor landscapes of Alaska, many painted in remote locations. She has presented workshops (beginning to advanced) from Fairbanks to Homer. Gael exhibits in solo and group shows, and national and statewide juried exhibitions. She is currently serving as the president of the Fairbanks Watercolor Society.

Ray Pierotti • Atlanta, GA Reconnecting Through Painting
Included in corporate, private and public collections throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia, with numerous solo exhibitions to his credits, Ray Pierotti has been a full-time professional visual artist since 1964. Carol Wilbur • Fairbanks, AK Watercolor
Carol Wilbur is a lifelong resident of Fairbanks. She holds a teaching degree as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and metalsmithing. She lives in Fairbanks with her husband Jack and children Sara and Aaron. She maintains a personal studio at Well Street Art Company.

Experienced instructor Vladimir Zhikhartsev will provide easy-to-grasp instructions and demonstrations as well as techniques and tips for mastering color, composition and basic concepts in “Plein Air” painting. Vladimir Zhikhartsev • Fairbanks, AK Intermediate Watercolor
Vladimir Zhikhartsev moved to Fairbanks from Russia in 1996. A professional artist, he has had six shows in Alaska and numerous shows in Russia. He is well known as a 14 time Gold Medal winner in Ice Art Championships around the World. He participated in Winter Olympic Ice Art Festivals in Salt Lake City, 2002 and Turin, Italy 2006. He teaches European - Russian style watercolor workshops and ice sculpture classes.
