Woodwind registrants have the opportunity to meet with their guest artists following “Meet the Artists” at 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon, July 13, to get acquainted during the Chancellor’s Reception in the Great Hall OR go to their first class on Monday. Flutists are asked to meet with Barcellona on Sunday at 4pm and then go to the Chancellor’s reception in the Great Hall. Workshops and Master Classes
35) Woodwinds: Flute Master Class $150
Instructors: Barcellona and McWayne; Pianist: Allison
9:30-10:45am; M-F, Both Weeks
Students will perform works from solo repertoire. Flutists for Festival Orchestra will be selected from these participants and must be considered to be flute “majors.”
36) Woodwind Master Classes for Clarinet, Oboe and Bassoon $150
Instructors: Roberts, Fink and Muller
10:00am-12:00noon; M-F, Both Weeks
The guests will each have master classes with their students.
37) Woodwinds: Flute Choir $150
Instructors: Barcellona and McWayne
10:45am-12:00noon; M-F, Both Weeks
A large ensemble composed of a variety of flutes. The ensemble will read many different styles of literature and will perform at Lunch Bites.
38) Woodwinds: Chamber Music Ensembles — $135
Instructors: Staff
1:30-3:30pm; M-F, Week I; M-Th, Week II
Placement auditions for flutes will be held on Sunday afternoon, July 15, after Meet the Artists. Guest faculty will determine groupings by Monday afternoon. Placements for other instruments will be held Monday during class times. Music will be supplied, but students are encouraged to bring their own. Pre-formed groups are welcome.
39) Woodwind Sectionals — Instructors: Barcellona and Staff
3:30-4:30pm; T,W,Th, Week I; M-Th, Week II No Charge
Woodwind players in the Festival Orchestra are urged to attend sectionals, which will involve repertoire to be performed.
Performance Classes
1) Festival Orchestra — Conductor: Guyver $100

Planned repertoire will include Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espanol;
Sarasate’s Navarra, featuring Alvaro and Routa Gomez;
Mozart’s Flute & Harp Concerto (First Movement) featuring Jenny Lindner and John Barcellona; Three Leroy Anderson pieces, including “Belle of the Ball”; and the Dvorak Symphony No.8 in G.
2) Festival Wind Ensemble — Conductor: Brockman $100
4:30-6:00pm, M-F, Both Weeks
Performance: Friday, July 25, 8pm(note time change from printed catalog of 7pm) as part of AN EVENING OF VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC, Davis Concert Hall
The Festival Wind Ensemble will be exploring music from an array of world wide composers. The concert repertoire will be selected from among such notables as Nelhybel, Bernstein, Holst, Persichetti, Vaughan-Williams, and Copland. In addition, rehearsals will focus on the techniques of balance, phrasing, dynamics, articulation, sight-reading, and quality concert preparation.
9) Festival Latin Jazz Ensemble $100
Instructor: Olsen
8:30-10:00pm, M, Tu, Wed, Week I; M-F Week II (right after Jazz Band!)
Performance: Sunday, July 27, 8:00pm, Davis Concert Hall
This small group combo will explore Afro-Cuban and related styles in the context of jazz. The ensemble will focus on mastering the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic aspects of this style. There will also be an exploration into the historical and cultural foundations of Latin music. Experience with performing jazz or Afro-Cuban/Latin music is recommended.
John Barcellona • Los Angeles, CA Flute
John Barcellona is Professor of Flute at California State University Long Beach. He is also the flutist with the internationally acclaimed Westwood Wind Quintet. An active freelance musician with many orchestras, he also writes for Flute Talk Magazine, and he travels internationally giving concerts and master classes.
David McGuire • Cleveland, OH Oboe and English Horn
David McGuire has degrees in music, religion and philosophy and has been the guest solo artist with many orchestras including the San Antonio Symphony and the Cleveland Orchestra. He is currently President of the Board of Trustees of the Grammy Award winning Cleveland Chamber Symphony.
Dorli McWayne • Fairbanks, AK Flute
Dorli McWayne is principal flutist for the Fairbanks Symphony, and has appeared as soloist with the Arctic Chamber Orchestra. She is an adjunct Professor of Music at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. McWayne is the founder and director of the Fairbanks Flutists and has performed across the country with the Professional Flute Choir.
David J. Muller • Whittier, CA Bassoon and Contra-Bassoon
David Muller was with the Mexico City Philharmonic for several years. He recently performed a chamber version of Wagner’s Ring with the Long Beach Opera which received international acclaim. He remains active as a free-lance artist, is currently Music Department Chair at Whittier College, and has been a guest artist with the Fairbanks (Alaska) Symphony Orchestra.
Steven Roberts • Los Angeles, CA Clarinet
Steven Roberts is a freelance musician in both the live concert and recording industry. As principal clarinet, he performs regularly with the Pacific Symphony, the Los Angeles Opera and Opera Pacific. He has been involved with more than 200 movie scores, including Geisha, Munich, King Kong, and War of the Worlds, to mention a few. He is in demand for virtually every live music venue in Los Angeles.
