General Information

To help you understand the format of our Festival, here is a  brief summary of each area of study which we offer:

Strings, Woodwinds and Brass:  Our classical studies include 2 hours a day in chamber music ensembles, plus master classes, orchestra, string chamber orchestra, wind ensemble (band)rehearsals in preparation for concerts as well as opportunities for private lessons.  We've always offered jazz studies for woodwinds and brass, but this year we are bringing in a fabulous jazz violinist as well.  We offer master classes and combos in jazz studies as well as Jazz Band rehearsals in preparation for concerts.

Classical and World Percussion:  Thanks to UAF Professor Scott Deal, this area of the Festival is growing!  There are beginning to advanced studies available in steel drums, world beat drumming, marimbas of Africa, Dance with Drums, African Choir and Latin Jazz Ensemble.  There are opportunities for people who don't read music, too, and there are performance opportunities for both beginners and advanced students.

Accordion and Harmonica:  We listen to registrants regarding new offerings at the Festival. Last year it was accordion.  It was so well-received that when someone asked for harmonica, we added that!  Again, there are opportunities for beginning to more advanced students and they’ll have performance opportunities around town!

Gospel Choir and Gospel Piano:  We added Gospel Choir four years ago this summer in hopes of recruiting registrants who loved this music -- and we succeeded!  If you love to sing but don't read music, try Gospel this summer. The Gospel Choir will sing at the Gospel Church Service.

Classical Voice and Choral Groups:  We offer beginning and intermediate singing workshops which appeal to those who have never had formal training.  We also offer four vocal ensembles:  Women's Vocal Ensemble; Men's Vocal Ensemble; Festival Chorus and Chamber Chorale (select group by audition).  For the other groups, it is not required that you read music. There is something for everyone and performance opportunities, too!

Cabaret:  We have offered cabaret singing workshops for more than 20 years when Chris Calloway first came.  (Yes -- Cab's daughter!)  Anyone interested in developing this style of singing is welcome and there are performance opportunities.  There is no audition but you do need to bring music for the piece you've prepared.  Instructions are in the catalog!

Opera and Musical Theatre:  There are opportunities for lead soloists (by audition) with considerable performance experience as well as for those singers who have had very little training but enjoy singing and wish to be in the Opera Chorus!  The performance the last Saturday is in costume!

Shakespeare and Theatre:  Three interesting classes are offered by a guest from London who is experienced in performing and teaching!  These are not performance classes, so don't be fearful of being on stage!

Creative Writing:  A day-long class both weeks with four talented guest artists who are sure to lead the would-be writer on the right track for success.

Storytelling:  Two different aspects of storytelling led by one of the Northwest's most talented storytelling teachers.

Healing Arts:  Some great classes in Tai Chi as well as Balance and Yoga--teaching you how to better your posture for better health.  Also, we offer inner-healing meditation.  Also these classes are very popular.

Ice Skating Week II:  These classes are primarily geared to our youth of any age. However there are some beginning adult classes you may wish to try to fit into your schedule.

Dance:  Ours is a study-performance for adults, but we do offer ballet, tap, modern and jazz classes to youth ages 12 and older who have had a minimum of 2 years of previous training.

Visual Arts:  We are offering a wide variety of classes and class times this year to try to fit the schedules of people who work days, too. Included are classes in water color, drawing, mixed media and oils/acrylics.
