Midnight Sun Watercolor Floating Camp

Students will receive organized, step by step instruction to gain a technical foundation that will allow them to explore the art of Landscape Painting. Students will be encouraged to choose their own subjects to paint. This class is for the beginner to intermediate level watercolor student who is interested in taking his/her painting skills to the next level. Learning water cycle, wet-in-wet, glazing and layering techniques will add to the students knowledge of watercolor painting. Instructor demonstrates and will discuss the many aspects of design and composition that enhance a watercolor. Creative challenges in the form of quick studies will teach the students when and how to use negative space, how to lift out color and how to enhance a center of interest, how to use linear and aerial perspectives to add depth to your painting. During class, students will begin to find their own painting style with lessons on creativity. Students will use their reference photos to paint realistic landscapes while painting in the studio environment (if rainy).

The float planes will be scheduled to depart Ketchikan for the Lodge on Sunday July 23rd in the late afternoon (4:30pm-5:30pm) as a group departure. All guests must be in Ketchikan no later than 3:30-4:00pm. The return float plane transfers will be scheduled to depart the Lodge to Ketchikan Friday July 28th in the morning (6:30am-8:00am) again group departure, making for return flights home probably no earlier than 11:00am.

Chena Hot Springs Visual Arts Intensive

Discover a fresh, loose approach to transparent watercolor painting on location. Enjoy painting the mountains, wildflowers, trees, and natural treasures of Alaska in this two-day plein air intensive back to nature workshop at Chena Hot Springs.

Learn how to observe and to simplify in a plein air setting and avoid overworking. Each day there will be demonstrations and exercises to energize and excite - followed by lots of time for painters to create their own work. If you have always wanted to try your hand at plein air and working outside, this is a perfect workshop you!

In case the weather is not favorable to painting outside, Chena Hot Springs will provide an alternative space to paint. We will explore natural subjects through daily morning demonstrations and exercises. Feel free to bring any photo or sketch relating to Alaska’s wild places that inspire you. Some experience in watercolor is helpful but not required.

Starting April 15th, a 50% discount for a non-refundable room is available at the resort for all watercolor workshop participants.




Watercolor Workshop at Delta

Using unique watercolor techniques, this class will move beyond the basics to help students develop fresh, dynamic paintings through the use of colors, values, gradation, shapes and edges. The class will include outdoor sessions, weather permitting, for Plein Air painting to explore the local landscape.




Wool, Wet-Felting, and Wearable Art

This workshop will focus of the basic techniques of wet-felting. Basic fundamentals of design will be discussed focusing on line, color, and pattern to create a design influenced by the surrounding landscape. This design will be used to make a wearable or non-wearable felted two dimensional artwork. Participants will use wool roving in a variety of colors, soap, and water to complete this process.




Paper Pop-up Structures

In this introductory one-day workshop, we will create a series of pop-ups that may be used in handmade books and cards. First, we'll make a series of samples and then develop a few ideas more fully as we fold, cut, glue and draw.

Students should bring:
- pencil
- eraser
- scissors
- x-acto knife with spare blades
- metal edge ruler
- small cutting mat
- colored pencils or markers
- small amount of special paper/collage material - may include may include photos, text, artwork for recycling, etc.
- small brush and small plastic container with lid for glue




Painting in Nature’s Studio

Outside in nature’s studio are the greatest challenges and rewards. Learn to simplify and reduce the complexity of a scene into the most important shapes and values, working loose and juicy. This will be a fast-paced and fun-filled 2 day plein air workshop on the grounds of beautiful Chena Hot Springs as we kick off the 2017 Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival!




Find Your Photo Mojo

Todd Paris, instructor

Topics covered will include overriding auto settings on your camera to capture better pictures, composition tips, shooting landscapes, people, close-ups (macro), post-processing your photos, and sorting/organizing digital photos on your home computer. Participants much have their own digital camera capable of shooting in manual mode. DSLR or mirrorless recommended. Use of a tripod is also highly recommended.

Laptop not required, but welcome to bring if you have a photo processing software on it (i.e. Adobe Creative Cloud)




Composing in the Wilderness

Now in its sixth year, the 2017 Composing in the Wilderness field course will take you to two spectacular regions of Northern Alaska: Denali National Park and Preserve and the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. Join adventurer-composer Stephen Lias for eight days exploring the stunning beauty of Denali’s wilderness and the mighty Yukon River, learning how the life of the region is reflected in the sounds you hear, interacting with scientists and interpretive rangers, and developing your creative skills through translating these ideas into original chamber music.

Following your wilderness experiences you'll be flown by bush plane back to Fairbanks where your new works will be rehearsed and performed by top performers from the faculty of the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. Encapsulating inspiration, composition, rehearsal, and performance, this field course is sure to be an intensive and exhilarating creative experience.

Participants should be prepared to live in rustic conditions and be physically fit enough for strenuous mountain hikes, stream crossings, etc. Participants must also be trained composers (professional, faculty, or students currently enrolled in a university composition program) with experience preparing their own manuscripts and writing chamber music for various instruments.
