Come join us for a class in making your own illustrated children’s book with artist
and illustrator Jacob Lesan. Whether you are a beginning artist or a seasoned artist
wanting to freshen your imagination and boost your creativity, this class has
something to offer everyone, with a series of exercises and lessons in maximizing
flow state, turning off your inner critic, and embracing your inner child with delight
and imagination. By the end of the class, you will walk away with your very own
illustrated book (or at least the tools to finish it if you need more time). Materials are included.

Day 1:
Warm-up: introductions, shape ABC’s, telestrations drawing game
Guided Practice: Storyboarding
Lecture: drawing basics, simplification, a child’s satisfaction with drawing

Day 2:

Warm-up: shape ABC’s, character drawing game

Lecture 1: drawing characters: simplification, squash and stretch, expression,
gesture and gesture silhouette, motion (classical painting vs. modern illustration)
Guided Practice: character drawing exercise (beginner, intermediate, and advanced
options)
Lecture 2: Composition and camera angle: balancing shapes, placement, lights and
darks, diagonals, borders and framing, angle for most drama and/or best
storytelling
Guided Practice: camera angles exercise
Homework: storyboard revisions

Day 3:
Warm-up: shape ABC’s, building blocks exercise
Guided practice: drawing illustrations and layout

Day 4
Warm-up: shape abc’s, motif design
Lecture: line quality
Guided practice: inking illustrations

Day 5
Warm-up: shape ABC’s,
Lecture: watercolor techniques and lighting
Guided Practice—watercolor illustrations
Conclusion: Simple book binding and final discussion
