  • Biography

MaryCatherine Moroney, holds a B.M. in Voice Performance from DePauw University, a M.M. and G.P.D. in Voice Performance from Peabody Institute of Music, and a MAT from the University of Alaska Anchorage. She was acclaimed for her “handling of a comic role with sparkling humor and fortissimo sneezes” in the role of Berta for Dayton Opera’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

An avid recitalist, she has performed oratorio, concert, jazz and cabaret/theatre throughout the United States and internationally on tours to Russia, Bolivia and South Africa. She has been the Alto Soloist in Handel's Messiah with a number of various performing groups. She has been a featured soloist premiering new works with the Masterworks Chorale, Left Bank Concert Society, and other new music ensembles. Ms. Moroney is committed to exploring and promoting the work of living composers, especially in the expanding repertoire of American song.

A versatile performer, some of her role repertory includes the title role of Carmen, Mercedes (Carmen), Madame de Haltière (Cendrillon), Mama Lucia (Cavalleria Rusticana), Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Mother Abbess (The Sound of Music), Female Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia), Charlotte (A Little Night Music), Zita (Gianni Schicchi), and Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro). She has been a member of the Castleton Residency program, an Artist-in-Residence with Dayton Opera, a Studio Artist with Opera New Jersey, and performed a number of productions with both the Opera Camerata of Washington DC, the Baltimore Symphony Pops Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfonia Juvenil. She presented Adriano's Scene and Aria from Wagner's Rienzi with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, as well as appearing as the Alto Soloist in their productions of Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. She will join the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra again this spring as a soloist in their 2025 Opera Season Finale.

Beginning with Opera Fairbanks' production of Verdi and the Bard, where she appeared as Meg in scenes from Falstaff, Ms. Moroney then made her second appearance creating the role of Belinda in the world premiere of the Color of Gold! She took the stage with Opera Fairbanks again as the hapless maid Phobia in Pizza con Funghi, and as the Village Wag in Rumpelstiltskin. She sang Mercedes for the 10th anniversary concert gala Vivica and Friends, featuring Vivica Genaux, and has also been seen as Carmen and Marthe in scenes for the Opera Fairbanks Opera Ball, as well as the jazz soloist with the Opera Ball Orchestra.

In addition to performing, Ms. Moroney teaches adjunct voice at UAF as well as maintaining her own private studio. She traveled to Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany to teach and perform as part of the Interharmony Music Festival. She has taken on the role of stage director for various productions through FLOT, Opera Fairbanks and UAF Opera Workshop, and has enjoyed expanding her love of theatre and music from a whole new perspective.
